Name: Illinois Central College "Between the Lines" Program Explores Fantasy Literature
Date: October 3, 2016
Time: 2:30 PM - 4:30 PM CDT
Event Description:
Join Illinois Central College’s “Between the Lines” program as English, Humanities, and Language Studies Assistant Professor Andrew Bonvicini explores the “Lost Books of Long Ago: World-Building and Authority in Fantasy Literature”.
The Lost Tales of Middle Earth, the Necronomicon of Abdul Alhazred, the Collected Sayings of Muad-Dib by the Princess Irulan, the Books of the Vishanti in Doctor Strange comics, the scholarly works and hidden libraries in the stories of Jorge Luis Borges – these are just a few examples of the “lost books” of fantasy and science fiction literature. These “lost books” deepen and solidify the world-building in fantasy and science fiction novels. Each one represents a vast source of knowledge, authority and inspiration and is spoken of in secretive whispers and accessible to only a few brave readers. Come and explore a few of these imaginary texts and learn about fantasy as a literature genre.
“Between the Lines” is a lecture series presented by the faculty members of the English, Humanities and Language Studies Department at ICC.  The goal of the series is to offer literary presentations which will interest students and people in the community as well as promote reading literacy and scholarly study.
